ARIZONA MAN CONVICTED IN MOBILE HOME SCAM

Mar. 25, 2011 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) By, Rich Lord

Jason P. Unangst persuaded people to invest nearly $3 million in his plan to buy repossessed mobile homes and sell them to hurricane-ravaged areas — but never purchased so much as a single double-wide.

On Thursday, the Arizona man pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh to transporting property taken by fraud and money laundering.

Mr. Unangst confirmed to U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab that he ran JPU Enterprises Inc., portrayed to investors as a firm that had an inside track with a finance company that was foreclosing on mobile homes.

Internal Revenue Service Special Agent Kevin Petrulak said that Mr. Unangst and collaborators “expressed to investors that they could buy mobile homes for pennies on the dollar,” and promised 30 percent to 100 percent returns in just 60 to 180 days.

HOUSE APPROVES MAJOR CUTS TO SENIOR PROGRAMS

Last month the U.S. House of Representatives passed a spending bill that could drastically cut initiatives put in place to help seniors maintain their economic independence.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) has criticized the bill, which would cut 64% of funding to the Senior Community Service Employment Program. The SCSEP is the only major employment opportunity program specifically designed to help disadvantaged seniors find jobs and remain in the workforce. The program cuts could result in a loss of 83,000 part-time jobs.

“For older adults aged 55-64, who cannot yet claim Social Security, the loss of this program could be particularly devastating,” said Jim Firman, president and CEO of NCOA. “According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, older workers who have lost a job are more likely than any other age group to face very long-term unemployment and remain jobless for 99 weeks or more.” (from a related NCOA article, here)

Other provisions include millions of dollars in cuts to housing programs, low-income home energy assistance, community health centers and Social Security claims operations.

It remains unclear if the bill will pass through the Senate.

AUTHORIZED IRS e-file PROVIDERS

Tax professionals and companies who are accepted into the electronic filing program with the IRS are called “Authorized IRS e-file Providers”. When preparing your 2010 tax return online, you will be given a self-selected PIN number to use as an electronic signature. After signing and submitting your return, the IRS system will automatically check for errors and missing information.  If your return cannot be processed for any reason, it will be sent back to the online provider you used.  You will be notified by email if there was a problem with the information.

Within 48 hours of electronically sending your return to the IRS, they will send out an acknowledgment of receipt. This is your proof of filing and should be printed out and kept with your tax records. If you are due a refund, you can expect to receive it within three weeks. Refunds are returned even faster with Direct Deposit, which you can select during the filing process. If you owe the IRS money, you are responsible for payment by April 15th, 2011. With the convenience of the internet, individuals can file State and Federal income returns depending on the state you live in.

Be sure the Authorized IRS e-file Provider logo appears on the homepage of the electronic filing company you use.

MEDICARE FRAUD COSTS $60 BILLION A YEAR

According to an AARP article published last month, Medicare fraud costs tax-payers a whopping $60 billion a year. By billing the program for thousands of unnecessary services and equipment, criminal physicians and therapists, nurses and even health care companies are getting away with one of the easiest and most lucrative scams in the country’s history.

Thankfully, the U.S. Justice Department is fighting back. Anticipating a rising number of aging baby boomers and the ensuing financial pressure on the system, the Department together with Medicare officials are cracking down on suspicious claims. Since 2007, a nationwide law enforcement program has indicted 800 defendants who submitted nearly $2 billion in false bills, most often with stolen Medicare ID numbers. You can seek help in filing Medicare claims and verifying accuracy by speaking with a licensed professional fiduciary.

Here are a few measures that individuals can take to help fight fraud:

  • Never allow someone to borrow your Medicare ID number
  • Review your Medicare claims for accuracy
  • If you think you’ve spotted Medicare fraud, call 1-800-633-4277 to report it.
